Beatrix Jones Farrand opened her landscape design office in New York in 1895. In 1899 she achieved the distinction of being the only female founding member of the American Society of Landscape Architecture. Farrand's career spanned the next five decades and included notable projects such as Dumbarton Oaks in Washington D.C., Dartington Hall in Devonshire, England, and Princeton University.
